JUCHE 주체-主體 is a philosophical idea that man is the master of everything and decides everything. In other words, the idea is that man is the master of the world and his destiny. It is said that this idea was rooted in Baekdu Mountain which symbolizes the spirit of the Korean people. The diagram represents Baekdu mountain.
◊ Historical note: From ITF Newsletter NO.2 1985. “TUL Since the new encyclopedia is available it is an appropriate time to remind people that there has been a pattern change. Ko-Dang is being replaced by JU-CHE and Master Park Jung Tae has been giving seminars to familiarise students with this change. Since the encyclopedia came out there has been an increase in new techniques and JU-CHE, although having most of the movements of Ko-Dang, has had some other, more difficult, moves added. The addition of these, more difficult moves, is felt to be appropriate to be practiced at that stage as it is possibly the peak of a student’s ability, depending on the age of course. Ko-Dang was chosen to be replaced as it was the last person in the historical events chosen for TKD patterns. JU-CHE means completely self-supporting and is most appropriate at this time.”
(The I.T.F. under Grandmaster Choi, Jung-Hwa aka ITF-C has renamed this pattern Ko-Dang and added Ki-aps, and the I.C.T.F. has renamed this pattern, Ch’ang Hon)
